Having lost my two closest companion pets in the space of only six months, I have been thinking about getting a puppy. As much as I love the three remaining cats, this house really needs a dog. Someone to make anyone think twice about breaking in, and large enough to use the invisible fence we had for Ziggy.

So last Sunday Dale and I bought a Border Collie puppy. We've named him Maxwell. At five weeks old, we won't be able to bring him home until Saturday, and I'm jumping up and down in my seat with impatience. I'm so looking forward to having a dog I can train. I want to play Frizbee, and hope he will take to fetching as he gets bigger. Ziggy was also a full blooded Border Collie, so I know how much attention they require. With the kids gone and Dale constantly on the road, it will be good to have a dog that will require activity. One that will bring me toys to throw when I spend too much time at the desk.

Dale had him mostly picked out by the time I got back from my recent trip to New York, and said he was tempted to meet me at the airport with him. He changed his mind, and I agreed it would have been a mistake. I was very pleased to be able to pick out the puppy at the breeder's place. Not the one Dale had chosen, but the other male in that litter. I like this one because A) he doesn't look too much like Ziggy, and B) he's got one blue eye. I find that unutterably cool.

It feels like Christmas, and I can hardly wait for Saturday.

This house has just been too empty without Silas and Riley.
